The New Plymouth Airport is located 11 km north from the city center of New Plymouth and 4 km from Bell Block on the west coast of New Zealand's North Island. With over 300.000 passengers a year, New Plymouth Airport is 9th busiest airport in the country. A reconstruction project is underway replacing the aging terminal (build in the '60) with a new, modern one.
The New Plymouth Airport is served by both JetStar Airways (to Auckland) and Air New Zealand (Auckland, Christchurch and Wellington), using ATR turboprop aircraft due to the short runway. A runway extension is planned for though.
New Plymouth Airport is not a large airport so there are not many flights departing here. There are only a few destinations that you can reach from New Plymouth Airport, most of these are operated by Air New Zealand. Many people take a flight to Auckland and transfer to another flight there.
For getting into the city you have several choices. You can rent a car at one of the many agencies. Taxis are available too, a ride into the city would cost around $40 to $50. Alternatively you can take the shuttle bus, Scott's Airport Shuttle which departs after each flight, tickets start at $18.
