Turkish Airlines is the national airline of Turkey and one of the largest airlines in the world based on number of destinations. Turkish Airlines flies to 119 countries, more than any other airline.
Turkish Airlines is based at Istanbul's Ataturk Airport and has secondary hubs at Istanbul's Sabiha Gokcen Airport and at Ankara and Izmir.
The airline was formed in 1933 and is one of the oldest in the world. The initial name was State Airlines Administration but after a reorganization in 1956 the airline was renamed as Turk Hava Yollari, or Turkish Airlines. In the 1970's the airline was plagued by a poor reputation, several accidents, hijackings and delays. The government recognized the importance of the airline as a way to present Turkey to the world and ordered a major makeover. The airline invested heavily in technical staff and sites and new aircraft were ordered so that Turkish Airlines now has one of the youngest fleet in Europe and one of the best safety records. The last decades were a challenge for Turkish Airlines with continuing turmoil in the Middle-East and increased competition from low-cost airlines. Still it was able to increase passenger numbers from 17 million in 2006 to 61 million in 2016 and remain profitable every year.
Turkish Airlines has a fleet of over 300 aircraft, most of which are single-aisle Airbus A320 and Boeing 737's. For long-distance flights Turkish Airlines has 4 Airbus A340-300 and 33 Boeing 777-300ER, both are wide-body, twin-aisle jets.
Turkish Airlines flies to over 206 destinations. Most Turkish Airlines flights are for destinations in Germany but Turkish Airlines has international flights to several other countries as well, like for example Turkey and United States. From its main base in Istanbul 74 flights depart every week. Many people who look for Turkish Airlines tickets look for flights to Izmir and Amsterdam.
