Irma Now ‘Extremely Dangerous’ Category 5 Hurricane; Florida Declares Emergency; Airlines Cancel Flights, Issue Waivers

Florida’s governor declared a state of emergency just before Hurricane Irma strengthened to an “extremely dangerous” category five storm Tuesday morning, now forecast to strike Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, both American territories popular with tourists within days, before possibly hitting the Florida coast this weekend.


Maximum sustained winds reached near 175mph—with higher gusts—and the storm could dump up to 12 inches of rain on U.S. territories.


Hurricane warnings have now been issued for both Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, meaning “life-threatening wind, storm surge, and rainfall” are expected by Wednesday; the Bahamas and Cuba are also in Irma’s path.


Tropical-storm-force winds extended outward by up to 140 miles from the center of the storm.
