Stewart Airport to get new name, $30M expansion

Port Authority commissioners voted unanimously Thursday to change the name of Stewart International Airport and expand the terminal to better position the airport as a gateway to the metropolitan area.


Huntley Lawrence, the Port Authority’s aviation director, didn’t disclose the name in his presentation, but said “New York” would figure prominently in it and “local and historic ties” would be preserved, an apparent reference to Archie Stewart, whose family donated the land for the airport in 1935.


Sketches of the 20,000-square-foot addition to the terminal that Lawrence showed commissioners, however, carried the name “New York International at Stewart Field.”
