Indonesia hopeful of breakthrough in direct air connectivity with India

Indonesia is hopeful of breaking the deadlock in terms of direct air connectivity between Indian cities and Indonesia soon, which has been preventing Indian inbound traffic to Indonesia from reaching the expected levels. According to Rizali W Indrakesuma, Ambassador of Indonesia to India, at least three private carriers have evinced interest to commence operations on India routes, and the Indonesia government would be taking a call on these requests soon. Besides this, Garuda, the national carrier of Indonesia, will be soon signing a code-share agreement with Jet Airways, the Ambassador informed. "œThe Indonesia government was not willing to transfer the Garuda rights to any private airlines earlier. But lately, there is a realisation by the government that it cannot rely only on Garuda," he said. Indonesia's leading domestic carrier, Lion Air, and region's Low-Cost Carrier AirAsia are believed to have approached the Indonesian government for routes approval to India.
