Plumes of ash and stream from a volcano in the Batangas province some seventy kilometres south of Manila has forced the closure of Ninoy Aquino International Airport overnight. Overnight and throughout this morning, scores of flights have been cancelled, disrupting the travel plans of thousands.

Singaporean website, The Newspaper, is reporting that the Taal volcano is generating an ash plume one kilometre high and there are signs of increasing volcanic activity. The volcano is in a lake and thousands of people who live on the lake’s islands have been evacuated.

The volcano is described as small but dangerous. Reuters is reporting the head of The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, Renato Solidum, as saying;
